What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are often used by websites to improve user experience and to generate statistics about website usage. There are two main types of cookies: session cookiesandpersistent cookies.

Session cookies are temporary files that are stored on your computer or mobile device for the duration of your visit to a website. They allow you to move freely from page to page without having to log in again each time.

Persistent cookies are stored on your computer or mobile device for a longer period (usually several months or years). They allow websites to remember your preferences and settings so that you do not have to re-enter them every time you visit the website.

Most cookies are harmless and do not identify you personally, but some cookies can be used to track your online activities and may contain personally identifiable information. You can control the use of cookies on your computer or mobile device by changing the settings in your web browser. Please note, however, that if you disable cookies, some website functions may not work properly.

Different types of cookies on the Internet

There are four different types of cookies on the Internet: session cookies, persistent cookies, first-party cookies, and third-party cookies.

Session cookies are temporary files used to store information while you visit a website. Once you close your web browser, the session cookie is deleted.

Persistent cookies are permanent files stored on your computer until they expire or are manually deleted.

First-party cookies are created by the website you are visiting, while third-party cookies are created by advertising companies and other organizations present on the website.

Cookies can be used to track your online activities and tailor advertising to your interests, but they can also pose a privacy risk if they fall into the wrong hands. For these reasons, it is important to know the different types of cookies and understand how they are used.

Cookies and data protection under German law

In Germany, cookies are subject to strict data protection laws. Websites must obtain the explicit consent of users before storing cookies on their computers. Users must also be informed about what data is collected and how it is used. Finally, users have the right to delete cookies at any time and to opt out of the collection of their data. These strict laws help to protect German internet users from their personal data being mishandled or misused.

Deleting cookies in the browser

Most browsers offer a way to view and manage cookies in the settings menu. To delete cookies, simply go to the settings menu and select the option to delete your browser data. This will remove all cookies from your browser, including those that may have been placed there by websites you have visited in the past. While this will log you out of any accounts you are currently logged into, it is a necessary step if you want to ensure that all your personal data is protected.
