The reality as people have known it so far is significantly changed by both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology. However, the approaches used differ: Virtual Reality creates a completely new reality, while Augmented Reality uses real reality.
AR and VR: What’s the Difference?
Companies can profitably use both technologies. Support is provided by a VR or AR agency. But what exactly are the differences between Virtual and Augmented Reality? The following article clarifies.
Augmented Reality
Within Augmented Reality, the actual reality is extended by additional, virtual content. This content can consist of games, videos, or information that is linked to real-world objects.
The basis of this technology is the recognition of patterns or images via the tablet or smartphone camera. The software’s reaction is triggered when a previously defined image is recognized. The AR program then executes a command, such as playing a video or outputting other information. For example, if the Eiffel Tower is recognized by the software, the camera image is altered by displaying interesting information about the structure.
No additional technical equipment is required to use Augmented Reality. A current tablet or smartphone with a camera is sufficient. The appropriate content is then integrated by the respective app. Augmented Reality also works without a mobile device via certain glasses, such as Google Glasses.
Virtual Reality
When people create a virtual reality through which the user can move freely, this is referred to as Virtual Reality. In this technology, the real world completely recedes into the background. Nevertheless, it is of course possible for the virtual world to also contain real elements, for example, when a virtual re-enactment of a concert visit or a museum visit takes place.
The technical basis of VR consists of the possibilities also known from the creation of video games or CGI sequences in films. Blender and other 3D modeling programs make it possible to create a wide variety of objects and position them in a virtual world. The virtual world can also be created using point-of-view cameras or 360° cameras, but the interactive options are then much more limited.
Unlike Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality cannot be entered via a simple smartphone. Special VR glasses are usually required for this, such as the Oculus Rift from Facebook or Sony’s VR headset. The PC then functions as the computing unit.
This equipment enables impressive VR experiences – however, this accessory naturally comes at a price. In addition to the glasses, special input devices are also necessary, at least if the virtual world is to be explored not only with the eyes but also with other senses.
Mixed Reality
The term Mixed Reality has become known primarily through Windows‘ HoloLens. It is a combination of Virtual and Augmented Reality, as reality and virtual elements merge.
Thus, components from a virtual environment are mixed with the real environment, which represents a very special experience for the user.
