Do I need WordPress hosting or should I rather rent my own WordPress server or even set it up and install it myself? In this article, we briefly and concisely report on the most important aspects and our tests, recommendations, and years of experience with our own WordPress servers and hosting offers.
Renting a WordPress Server – Test, Recommendation & Years of Experience with Managed Servers
To keep the article from getting too long, we will limit ourselves to the most important facts for deciding on your own WordPress server. Nowadays, there are almost no offers that are not good, but there are different WordPress server requirements depending on the project:
- Website or WooCommerce shop?
- Only one language or multilingual (WPML, Multilingual Press etc.)
- Number of pages/products over 1,000?
- Search function and/or filtering?
- AJAX requests planned?
- Image-heavy and many dynamic elements or rather static?
- Visitors per day over 1,000?
- Peak times or promotional periods with over 100 visitors in the same second?
- Extra database fields for additional functions or many ACF fields?
- Performance goals through caching (Redis etc.)?
If you can answer more than 7 of these questions, you should be able to decide for yourself whether hosting or a server makes sense. Many providers, see also below, easily offer an upgrade from a web hosting package to a managed server. Important: We are not considering private cloud or root servers that you have to configure yourself with Plesk or even via the console.
Our WordPress Server Recommendation after over 10 Years of Testing and Experience
For over 10 years, we have relied on Managed Servers from all-inkl (click here)*. Starting with several hosting packages, we quickly built a small server landscape for our primarily WordPress and WooCommerce projects and own several servers with extra configuration. The servers are very inexpensive compared to the performance and first-class support. We also always have the PHP Memory Limit raised to 512MB by default and Redis cache installed for the current PHP versions. Thus, we already have enormous advantages on the server side, in addition to a few other settings, and usually achieve approx. 30% performance increase according to GTMetrix when moving a server to us, without making any changes to a WordPress installation.
The KAS server administration is also very simple and intuitive and leaves little to be desired. In case of problems, load peaks, or errors that you cannot find yourself, support responds 24/7 within a few hours, sometimes even a few minutes, even at night and on holidays. Availability is 99.9% and updates etc. are always carried out at night, so you basically don’t have to worry about anything.
